What do i do in case of a fire?
If there is a fire in your home, leave immediately and call 911. We will do everything we can to save as much as possible. Do not try to save possessions or pets. The best thing you can do is discuss a fire escape plan with your loved ones before a fire happens.
Why do you send a fire truck along with an ambulance to a medical emergency?
Fire trucks have first responder personnel with specialized equipment and advanced training to aid in many emergency situations and can get help to you more quickly. The ambulance will provide transportation to an emergency room, depending on the nature of the call. All members of the Fife Lake Springfield Fire Department are certified in Basic Life Support and\or are nationally and State licensed Emergency Medical Technicians.
Why do you block traffic lanes at auto accidents -- more lanes than are necessary?
It's for the safety of our personnel and our patients. Blocking extra lanes keep our personnel safe when they go back to our apparatus to get more equipment, and it helps protect the victim we're trying to stabilize.
Why does the ambulance sit in front of my house or on the side of the road after they get the patient into the back?
In many ways, an ambulance is like a mobile emergency room. The ambulance carries the same equipment as the emergency room has - and even does the same procedures as the emergency room. Sometimes, a patient needs some medication or a special procedure prior to going to the hospital. Some medical conditions need to be addressed rapidly to ensure a positive outcome for the patient. If you see an ambulance Just sitting in the road please be patient and remember someones life is on the line and we are working to the best of our ability.
When I call for an ambulance, why do I sometimes see an ambulance from another town?
During the course of a day it is not unusual for Multiple calls for the ambulance to come in at the same time. If our ambulance is busy we will request an ambulance from the next available town or Department. This Mutual Aid system works both ways, therefore the Other agency's are commonly dispatched to the outside municipalities. Some the surrounding Agency's are also ALS (Advanced Life Support). In some Cases we may Call a paramedic unit to assist with specialized medical emergency's.
Why does the emergency equipment run with lights and siren, then just turn them off?
Sometimes when responding to an emergency we may receive new information that a patient is no longer in dire emergency, so we slow down to a safe speed and continue to our patient.
i saw a few firefighters just sItting on a firetruck When a house was on fire , should they be doing something other then sitting there?
Fighting a fire is very hard work, in many cases Firefighters put forth 110% of there effort and with the difficult and extremely hot conditions they are required to take breaks for there health and safety. We call this rest period "rehab". for example if a firefighter spends an hour and a half in a fire he is mandated to sit, relax and recover hydration.
What qualifications do I need to become a volunteer firefighter with the Fife Lake Springfield Fire Department?
The most important qualification is motivation, a true desire to help your fellow residents and your community. We do have a minimum age requirement of 18 for active members. Apart from that, there are no other qualifications other then your time, including previous firefighting experience. After a short probationary period (6 - 12 months) the department will pay for a specialized training course that will certify you as a Firefighter.
Why did so many fire trucks come when I just had a fire on my stove?
The fire department bases our response on the type of call we receive. Even a small stove top fire can grow rapidly. Until a fire crew can access the structure and determine that the fire is out, we would rather err on the side of caution and have all the resources in place to protect your family and property. Our goal is to always have more people then we need rather then not enough.
How do I schedule a fire engine to attend my event (carnival, block party, safety day, etc.)?
We are always willing to participate in community events, all you have to do is give us a call. please keep in mind that all of our truck are in full service at all times, should an emergency happen to occur we would have to leave the event to attend those needs.
